उत्पत्तिकाले स्वात्मानं किमादौ वेत्ति वा बहिः । प्रतिभासस्य वैचित्र्याद्युगपद्ग्रहणं कथम् ॥४३॥
utpattikāle svātmānaṃ kimādau vetti vā bahiḥ | pratibhāsasya vaicitryādyugapadgrahaṇaṃ katham
— at the time of (its) arising ; — its own self ; — first? ; — does (cognition) know ; — or the external ; — of the appearance ; — because of (its) diversity ; — simultaneous grasping ; — how (possible)?

At the time of its arising, does (cognition) know first its own self, or the external (object)? And given the diversity of the appearance, how (could there be) a simultaneous grasping (of both)?
