5.65
शब्दैरर्थाः प्रतीयन्ते सर्वत्रैवं क्व निश्चयः । स्फोटादर्थप्रतीतिश्चेद् व्यज्यते तैः क्व निर्णयः ॥६५॥
śabdairarthāḥ pratīyante sarvatraivaṃ kva niścayaḥ | sphoṭādarthapratītiśced vyajyate taiḥ kva nirṇayaḥ
— by words ; — meanings (objects) ; — are cognized ; — everywhere ; — thus ; — where (is there) certainty? ; — from the sphoṭa ; — the cognition of meaning ; — if (you say) ; — is manifested ; — by them (the sounds) ; — where (is) the settled conclusion?

(If) meanings are cognized by words everywhere thus — where (then) is (any independent) certainty (about objects)? And if (you say) the cognition of meaning arises from the sphoṭa, (which is) manifested by them (the sounds) — where (then) is the settled conclusion (save in consciousness)?
