5.57
वह्नेस्तु तत्रापेक्ष्यत्वे जनकत्वं व्यवस्थितम् । यच्च यद्विषयं ज्ञानं जज्जन्यं तस्य दृष्टवत् ॥५७॥
vahnestu tatrāpekṣyatve janakatvaṃ vyavasthitam | yacca yadviṣayaṃ jñānaṃ jajjanyaṃ tasya dṛṣṭavat
— but of the fire ; — there ; — if it be what is depended upon ; — the status of producer ; — is established ; — and whatever ; — having a given object ; — cognition ; — is produced by that ; — of it ; — as in (direct) seeing

But of the fire, if it be what is (truly) depended upon there, the status of (being the) producer (of the cognition) is established; and whatever cognition has a given object is produced by that (object itself), just as in (direct) seeing (— so the object, not the mark, does the work).
