एष इत्यपदिश्येत तज्ज्ञानं जनयेत् कथम् । करणत्वे कर्त्रपेक्षा कर्तृत्वे तदपेक्षता ॥५६॥
eṣa ityapadiśyeta tajjñānaṃ janayet katham | karaṇatve kartrapekṣā kartṛtve tadapekṣatā
— 'this' ; — were it designated ; — the cognition of that ; — could it generate ; — how? ; — if (the inferential mark be) an instrument ; — dependence on an agent (arises) ; — if (it be) an agent ; — dependence on that (a further factor)

(Even) were it designated 'this,' how could (the mark) generate the cognition of that (fire)? If (the mark be taken as) an instrument, it depends on an agent; and if (taken as) an agent, it (in turn) depends on that (another factor — so the inference cannot stand alone).
