स्वार्थानुमानं नैवं चेन्न शब्दैरन्तरे स्थितम् ।
अग्निरेषोऽत्र धूमो वा दर्शयेन्न ह्यदर्शने ॥५५॥
svārthānumānaṃ naivaṃ cenna śabdairantare sthitam |
agnireṣo'tra dhūmo vā darśayenna hyadarśane
If (you object that) inference-for-oneself is not so constituted (by words) — (yet even there) it does not stand established within (the mind) by words (alone); (for) 'this here is fire' or 'smoke' — how could (such a verbal determination) reveal (anything) when there is no (prior direct) seeing?
