सन्निधानादथाग्नेश्च चुल्ल्यादेः सन्निधिर्न किम् । धूमेन जन्यते ज्ञानं वह्निरत्रेति ते यदि ॥५२॥
sannidhānādathāgneśca cullyādeḥ sannidhirna kim | dhūmena janyate jñānaṃ vahniratreti te yadi
— from (its) proximity ; — or ; — of fire ; — and ; — of a hearth and the like ; — proximity ; — why not (equally inferred)? ; — by smoke ; — is produced ; — the cognition ; — 'here is fire' ; — thus ; — if for you

Or if (you say) it is from the fire's proximity — (then) why is not the proximity of a hearth and the like (equally inferred)? If for you the cognition 'here is fire' is produced by smoke (the same indeterminacy attaches to it).
