5.49

तद्बुध्नावयवैर्वाथ तेऽपि यान्त्यूर्ध्वतां क्षणात् । बुध्नस्तैर्नच सम्बद्धः कदाचिच्चक्षुषो भवेत् ॥४९॥

tadbudhnāvayavairvātha te'pi yāntyūrdhvatāṃ kṣaṇāt | budhnastairnaca sambaddhaḥ kadāciccakṣuṣo bhavet

— by the parts at its (the smoke's) base ; — or then ; — they too ; — go ; — upward ; — in a moment ; — the base ; — with them ; — and not connected ; — ever ; — of the eye ; — could be

Or (if you say the fire is inferred) by the parts at the smoke's base — they too rise upward in a moment, and the base (where fire is) could never be (held) connected with them for the eye (to fix upon).
