कथं न देवदत्तस्य यज्ञदत्तवदाख्यया ।
अत्र संकेतितत्वाच्चेत् संकेतेनात्र किं कृतम् ॥७७॥
kathaṃ na devadattasya yajñadattavadākhyayā |
atra saṃketitatvāccet saṃketenātra kiṃ kṛtam
(Else) why should not (the name) 'Devadatta' (apply to anyone), just as with 'Yajñadatta'? If (you say) it is because of an (established) convention here — (then ask:) by that convention, what (real link) has actually been effected (between word and thing)?
