कथं न देवदत्तस्य यज्ञदत्तवदाख्यया । अत्र संकेतितत्वाच्चेत् संकेतेनात्र किं कृतम् ॥७७॥
kathaṃ na devadattasya yajñadattavadākhyayā | atra saṃketitatvāccet saṃketenātra kiṃ kṛtam
— why not? ; — of Devadatta ; — as in the case of Yajñadatta ; — by the name ; — here ; — because of (prior) convention ; — if (you say) ; — by the convention ; — here ; — what has been done?

(Else) why should not (the name) 'Devadatta' (apply to anyone), just as with 'Yajñadatta'? If (you say) it is because of an (established) convention here — (then ask:) by that convention, what (real link) has actually been effected (between word and thing)?
