हस्तादेः करणत्वं हि मस्तकादेश्च कर्मता । कर्ता मनः स्वावयवी नामूर्ताया इदं पुनः ॥५४॥
hastādeḥ karaṇatvaṃ hi mastakādeśca karmatā | kartā manaḥ svāvayavī nāmūrtāyā idaṃ punaḥ
— of the hand and so on ; — the role of instrument ; — indeed ; — of the head and so on ; — and ; — the role of object ; — the agent ; — the mind ; — the (whole) possessing its own parts ; — not ; — of the formless (Paśyantī) ; — this ; — however

Indeed, the hand and so on play the role of instrument, the head and so on the role of object, while the mind is the agent — (Devadatta being) a whole possessed of its own parts; but for the formless (Paśyantī) this (tripartite division) cannot apply.
