6.8

Transliteration (IAST)

tatra ghaṭikā tithiḥ māso varṣaṃ ca varṣasamūhātmā iti samastaḥ kālaḥ parisamāpyate | tatra sapañcāṃśe aṅgule caṣaka iti sthityā ghaṭikodayaḥ ghaṭikā hi ṣaṣṭyā caṣakaiḥ tasmāt dvāsaptatyaṅgulā bhavati

— a ghaṭikā (a unit of about 24 minutes) ; — a lunar day ; — a month ; — a year ; — consisting of an aggregate of years ; — the whole of Time ; — is completed, is encompassed ; — in a finger-breadth plus a fifth ; — a caṣaka (a small time-unit) ; — the arising of the ghaṭikā ; — by sixty caṣakas ; — seventy-two finger-breadths

Therein the ghaṭikā, the lunar day, the month, and the year — which consists of an aggregate of years — thus the whole of Time is encompassed. Of these, by the convention that a caṣaka occupies a finger-breadth and a fifth, the ghaṭikā arises; for a ghaṭikā is composed of sixty caṣakas, and therefore it amounts to seventy-two finger-breadths.
