घटमानयशब्दस्य प्रतिषेधेन वाच्यता । अघटादेरपोहेन किं घटं प्रतिपद्यसे ॥७८॥

ghaṭamānayaśabdasya pratiṣedhena vācyatā | aghaṭāderapohena kiṃ ghaṭaṃ pratipadyase

— of the utterance 'bring a pot' ; — by negation ; — (its) significative power ; — of the non-pot and the rest ; — through exclusion ; — is it that? ; — the pot ; — you apprehend

(Is) the significative power of the utterance 'bring a pot' (constituted) by negation? Is it through the exclusion of the non-pot and the rest that you apprehend the pot (— a manifest absurdity, since one must first know the pot to exclude its opposite)?
