देशोऽपि न गृहीतोऽत्र धूमलेखानुरूपतः । नचापि निम्ने ह्रस्वे वा निश्चयोऽत्रावगम्यते ॥४६॥
deśo'pi na gṛhīto'tra dhūmalekhānurūpataḥ | nacāpi nimne hrasve vā niścayo'trāvagamyate
— the place too ; — is not grasped ; — here ; — in conformity with the line of smoke ; — nor even ; — in a low (place) ; — or in a small (one) ; — certainty ; — here ; — is arrived at

Nor is the (exact) place (of the fire) grasped here in conformity with the line of smoke; nor is any certainty arrived at here as to whether (the fire is) in a low place or a small one (— inference is thus indeterminate).
