4.52
अपृथग्वा पृथक्त्वे तु पटादेः करणं न किम् । अनुपादानतैव स्यादपृथक्त्वे स एव सः ॥५२॥
apṛthagvā pṛthaktve tu paṭādeḥ karaṇaṃ na kim | anupādānataiva syādapṛthaktve sa eva saḥ
— or not separate ; — if (it be) separate ; — but ; — of a cloth and so forth ; — the making ; — why not? ; — the very absence of (clay as) material cause ; — would result ; — if not separate ; — it is just that very (clay)

Or is it not separate? But if it be separate, why is not a cloth and the like (equally) produced (from clay)? And (the clay's) being no material cause at all would result; while if it be not separate, the pot is just that very (clay itself).
