5.11
स्वभावम् अवभासस्य विमर्शं विदुर् अन्यथा प्रकाशो ऽर्थोपरक्तो ऽपि स्फटिकादिजडोपमः ॥११॥
svabhāvam avabhāsasya vimarśaṃ vidur anyathā prakāśo 'rthoparakto 'pi sphaṭikādijaḍopamaḥ
— as the essential nature ; — of manifestation (the shining-forth) ; — reflective awareness (vimarśa) ; — they (the wise) know, hold ; — otherwise ; — the light (mere luminosity) ; — though tinged by the object ; — even ; — would be like an insentient crystal and the like

The wise hold reflective awareness (vimarśa) to be the very nature of manifestation; otherwise the light, even though tinged by the object, would be (no more than) an insentient crystal and the like.
