tatra prātipade tasmin bhāge sa āmāvasyo bhāgo yadā kāsaprayatnāvadhānādikṛtāt tithicchedāt viśati tadā tatra grahaṇam tatra ca vedyarūpasomasahabhūto māyāpramātṛrāhuḥ svabhāvatayā vilāpanāśaktaḥ kevalam ācchādanamātrasamarthaḥ sūryagataṃ cāndram amṛtaṃ pibati iti

— in the first-lunar-day portion ; — the new-moon portion ; — caused by coughing, exertion, distraction, and the like ; — from a break in the lunar day ; — enters, intrudes ; — an eclipse ; — conjoined with the soma (moon) in the form of the knowable ; — the Rāhu that is the māyā-bound knower ; — incapable of dissolving (it) ; — capable only of veiling ; — the lunar nectar that has gone into the sun ; — drinks

Now in that first-lunar-day portion, when the new-moon portion intrudes by reason of a break in the lunar day caused by coughing, exertion, lapse of attention and the like, then an eclipse occurs there. And there the Rāhu that is the māyā-bound knower, conjoined with the soma in the form of the knowable, being by nature incapable of dissolving it and capable only of veiling, drinks the lunar nectar that has gone into the sun.
