१दीपेन क्रियते व्यक्तिर्घटादेः सत एव वा ॥४२॥
1dīpena kriyate vyaktirghaṭādeḥ sata eva vā
— by a lamp ; — is produced ; — the manifestation ; — of the pot and so forth ; — of the already-existent only ; — or (you might say)

(Objection:) Or the manifestation of the pot and the like is produced by a lamp — but (only) of what already exists (so the lamp merely reveals, it does not make).
