4.85
सामान्यमविशेषं चेदविशेषात्कुतः प्रमा । विशेषस्याप्यपूर्वत्वे कथं चास्ति समन्वयः ॥८५॥
sāmānyamaviśeṣaṃ cedaviśeṣātkutaḥ pramā | viśeṣasyāpyapūrvatve kathaṃ cāsti samanvayaḥ
— a universal ; — without particularity ; — if (you posit) ; — from the non-particular ; — whence valid cognition? ; — of the particular too ; — if (it be) never-before-given ; — and how ; — is there concomitance?

If (you posit a) universal devoid of particularity — from the non-particular whence (could there be) valid cognition? And if the particular too be never given before, how is there any concomitance (to ground the inference)?
