चितिरेव चेतनपदादवरूढा चेत्यसङ्कोचिनी चित्तम् ॥५॥

citir eva cetana-padād avarūḍhā cetya-saṅkocinī cittam

sūtra

— Consciousness itself ; — indeed, alone ; — from the level of the (free) experient ; — descended, fallen ; — contracting itself to the knowable (object) ; — is (called) citta — the individualized mind

Consciousness itself, descended from the plane of pure subjectivity and contracted by its objects, becomes the mind (citta).
